Systemic oppression, discrimination, and racism, along with violence, immigration, mass incarceration, and other stressors, may deeply affect your well-being. The emotional distress and racial trauma associated with navigating white spaces and ongoing disparities can be excruciating.

Yet, within this sea of challenges, therapy offers an opportunity to find healing and hope.

At Centering Wholeness Counseling, we provide online therapy for Black and Brown adults living in New York and Ohio, delivered by Black and Brown therapists. Our mission is to offer culturally affirming, convenient, and holistic counseling to disrupt the cycle of intergenerational trauma and foster mental wellness as a human right.

If you are looking for support that centers on your journey and intersections as a Black or Brown individual, you are in the right place.

Call 614-896-3599 or contact us to schedule a free consultation and begin your path to wholeness.

What Is Therapy for Black and Brown People?

Therapy for Black and Brown people is counseling centered on the experiences of Black and Brown communities.

It consists of meeting with a culturally competent therapist to address the distinct issues you face as a Black and Brown individual in all your intersections (heritage, gender identity, sexual orientation, spiritual values, socioeconomic background, and more). You will have brave, honest, and transformative conversations where you can fully show up without reservations.

The goal is to give you a nurturing and compassionate environment to explore yourself, overcome challenges, and heal from trauma. Your counselor will understand your situation and how history, social and cultural context, and systemic barriers play a part in your world.

What Can Therapy for Black and Brown People Help With?

Therapy can help you manage a wide range of mental, emotional, and behavioral difficulties, such as:

  • Anger

  • Anxiety and panic attacks

  • Depression

  • Emotional and social withdrawal

  • Insomnia or trouble sleeping

  • Lack of confidence and low self-esteem

  • Relationship and family problems

  • Stress

  • Trauma and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD)

Therapy for Black and Brown people can support you with these issues as well as the unique hardship you might encounter as a Black or Brown individual, which includes:

  • Discrimination, racism, and oppression

  • Emotional, physical, or sexual abuse

  • Fear and shame

  • Immigration problems (e.g., isolation, language barriers, disconnection, xenophobia)

  • Mass incarceration (e.g., being detained or arrested, caregiver incarceration, living in an overpoliced community)

  • Microaggressions

  • Racial and intergenerational trauma

  • Racial battle fatigue

  • The stigma of mental health (e.g., ignoring or underestimating mental health issues or seeing them as shortcomings)

  • Systemic inequities (e.g., reduced access to education, healthcare, housing, and other resources)

  • Violent physical or verbal attacks

If you are struggling with any of the above challenges or are looking for a sensitive and open space to explore and learn about yourself, we are here for you.

How Can Culturally Affirming Therapy Support Black and Brown People?

Culturally affirming therapy can help you feel seen, heard, and accepted for who you are—no code-switch or need to hide or downplay your identity. You will gain insight into yourself, your ancestry wisdom, and how your experiences as a Black or Brown individual might have shaped your path.

Your counselor will be well-versed in your reality, so instead of spending valuable time painting a picture of the cultural and racial nuances around your issues, you can focus on being present and speaking your truth.

Throughout this healing journey, you will develop a stronger connection with yourself based on compassion, love, and self-worth. You will get a better understanding of your trauma and other difficulties, dive into their lineage and roots, and allow space to process them.

Therapy can also support you to challenge any thoughts, beliefs, and behavior patterns that may not serve you. Your therapist will offer strategies and community resources to reduce distress, create positive change, and build meaningful relationships.

Black Mental Health at Centering Wholeness Counseling | Therapists of Color in New York and Ohio

We recognize that Black and Brown communities are not only less likely to seek mental health support, but they also face added barriers to quality treatment (e.g., shortage of non-white therapists, lack of health insurance, mistrust in the healthcare system). But we also know they are strong, resilient, and capable of liberation.

Centering Wholeness Counseling is a Black-owned practice offering mental health services to honor and uplift Black and Brown adults in New York and Ohio. Our services are delivered online and in multiple languages, including English, Spanish, and Twi.

Our therapists of color understand firsthand what it’s like to navigate the world as Black or Brown individuals. Yet, we also acknowledge every human is unique and precious in its own way, so we center our care on your individual story.

We approach counseling from a trauma-informed, anti-oppressive, and relational lens. This means we value the power of relationships, particularly the therapeutic relationship, and understand the complexity of trauma and its implications. We also rely on multicultural theories and evidence-based interventions to help you thrive.

Your therapy journey will start with a 1:1 consultation—15 minutes to chat about what you hope to gain from therapy, ask questions, and decide if we are a good match. If we both agree on moving forward, we’ll send you our intake paperwork and schedule your first session. We will create a treatment plan according to your needs, meeting regularly to work on your issues and accomplish your goals.

This quest can be as long or as short as you deem necessary. We are here to meet you where you are and will continue to support you as long as you need us. For more information about what to expect, visit our FAQ page.

Trauma Therapy

Trauma Therapy for Black and Brown People in New York and Ohio

A moment of distress or a series of disturbing events can change everything.

The loss of someone close to you, brutal acts of discrimination, or domestic violence may shatter your safety and sense of self, negatively impacting your well-being.

Traumatic experiences can happen to anyone, yet they may be more common for many Black and Brown individuals. Incidents of racism and oppression occur daily on a micro and systemic scale, especially within white spaces. Black and Brown trauma survivors may also pass on traumatic symptoms and adaptations from one generation to the next, disseminating these effects within communities of color.

While trauma can transform you, it doesn’t have to limit or command your journey.

At Centering Wholeness Counseling, we offer online trauma therapy for Black and Brown adults in New York and Ohio, along with Black mental health services, couples therapy, and other specialties. We strive to break the cycle of intergenerational trauma by providing culturally competent care and cultivating space for healing.

If you or someone you love is struggling with the debilitating aftermath of trauma, we are here to help.

Call 614-896-3599 or schedule a free consultation to get started.

What Is Trauma?

Trauma is the response to a distressing, threatening, or shocking event (or string of events) that has profound emotional and/or physical consequences.

Examples of traumatic events include:

  • Abuse or domestic violence

  • Accidents and injuries (e.g., traffic collisions, workplace injuries)

  • Childhood neglect or abandonment

  • Chronic illness or serious medical procedure (e.g., cancer, major surgery)

  • Criminal act (e.g., assault, robbery)

  • Death of a loved one

  • Exposure to traumatic materials or people experiencing trauma (also known as vicarious or secondary trauma)

  • Forced immigration

  • Incarceration

  • Natural disasters or emergencies (e.g., flooding, fire)

  • Racism or discrimination

  • Warfare or terrorism

There is no formula for trauma—it is unique to each individual. These experiences may affect people in different ways; some may be able to process them and move on, while others may carry the pain with them.

What Is Trauma Therapy?

Trauma therapy is a type of counseling focused on healing from trauma.

It consists of meeting with a mental health professional to better comprehend the layers of your trauma (symptoms, triggers, sources) and learn effective strategies to attain relief.

The goal is not to erase your painful memories but to gain insight into yourself and how these events may affect you so you can start recovering.

Do You Need Trauma Therapy?

When you experience a traumatic situation, your system may trigger your fight, flight, or freeze response to protect you from danger. After the crisis has passed, you may start to calm down and regain balance. Yet, sometimes, these events might leave lingering mental, emotional, and physical effects, also known as post-traumatic stress.

In the future, specific triggers like objects, sounds, or places may activate the same instinctive reaction and bring along post-traumatic stress symptoms. You may feel like you are re-experiencing the traumatic moment(s)—even if you are not in real danger.

Common post-traumatic stress symptoms include:

  • Anger and frustration

  • Constant worry or fear

  • Difficulty recollecting or talking about trauma

  • Extreme caution or hypervigilance

  • Flashbacks or distressing memories about your trauma

  • Hopelessness and low self-worth

  • Intense mood swings

  • Lack of energy and motivation

  • Restlessness and trouble concentrating

  • Shame and guilt

  • Sleep problems and nightmares

  • Withdrawal from locations, people, and situations that remind you of the traumatic event(s)

Although you might endure post-traumatic stress, this doesn’t mean you have post-traumatic stress disorder or PTSD. Only a mental health specialist can determine if the intensity and frequency of your symptoms fall under a PTSD diagnosis.

If you are exhibiting signs of post-traumatic stress or struggling to cope with trauma, therapy can help you.

How Can Trauma Therapy Help You?

Sharing your trauma story can be challenging, especially if you don’t fully remember it or are ashamed and confused about what happened. But you don’t have to be alone in your pain.

Therapy can help you get a better grasp of your trauma, uncovering its roots, signs, and impact on your quality of life. Your therapist will validate your unique experience without judgment, facilitating a space for vulnerability and reconciliation.

As you become more aware of your truth, you will develop a greater capacity for compassion and self-care. You will deepen your relationship with yourself, exploring and reframing limiting thoughts, emotions, and behaviors. Your counselor will also support you in finding healthier ways to cope with post-traumatic stress and alleviate your symptoms.

The purpose of trauma therapy is not to trigger you or force you to forget what hurts but to bring you back to wholeness and peace. The journey may be difficult, particularly at first, but there’s no need to rush it. You set the pace, and we will guide you through it.

What Is Couples Therapy?

Couples therapy or couples counseling is mental health support centered on managing challenges in romantic relationships.

It involves meeting with a counselor specializing in couples to discuss your issues, access expert guidance, and gain skills to strengthen your relationship. Your therapist will meet with you as a couple (and individually as needed), cultivating a confidential space to share your concerns, have tough conversations, and overcome your problems.

Treatment is tailored to your unique situation and what you hope to achieve—whether you are in crisis or not.

For example, if you want to take a break or end the relationship, couples therapy can steer you during this transition.

Now, if you don’t have major issues but are looking to learn more about one another, clarify your values, or prepare for a significant life event, couples therapy can also be an excellent option.

Why Couples Therapy?

Experiencing problems in your relationship doesn’t mean it’s over. It may simply indicate you both need to examine, recalibrate, and reconnect. These rough patches are a fantastic opportunity to grow as an individual and as a couple.

And while some partners manage to surf these waves on their own, every relationship can benefit from an expert to encourage open discussions and expand your perspective.

Common issues that bring couples to therapy include:

  • Affairs, lying, or trust problems

  • Difficulties related to household dynamics or parenting decisions

  • Financial or career stressors

  • Frequent arguments or fights

  • Lack of emotional or physical intimacy (e.g., isolation, sex problems)

  • Major life changes (e.g., immigration, marriage, having kids)

  • Misaligned values and unmet needs

  • Poor communication

  • Separation or divorce

  • Trauma

  • Trouble with family members, friends, or colleagues

If you are going through any of these challenges or want to reinforce your relationship, you are not alone.

We know bringing a third party into your world is not easy. But we have the training and experience to help you and your loved one thrive. No matter what you are going through, couples counseling can support you in healing and improving your bond.

How Can Couples Therapy Help You?

Couples therapy can help you navigate issues related to communication, trust, intimacy, and beyond.

You and your partner will enter a journey of exploration and awareness. Your therapist will guide you to discover what’s hiding underneath your issues, pinpoint harmful patterns, and offer healthier habits to adopt instead. The goal is to share your needs, desires, and frustrations without judging or dismissing each other so that you can create positive change.

As you gain more insight into your relationship, your partner, and yourself, your counselor will help you solve conflicts, recover trust, and revitalize your connection. You will learn evidence-based exercises and strategies to enhance your communication skills, regulate your emotions, and tune into one another.

Therapy can also support you in setting clear boundaries and expectations around your purpose as individuals and partners. Whether you are entering a new chapter, facing a big decision, or feeling scared about bringing something up, your counselor will facilitate conversations to reach a mutual understanding.

And if reconciliation is not possible, therapy can also provide the space and resources to part ways in a respectful manner.

 OUR PROCESS

Schedule

Click on the schedule button and find a date that works for your 1:1 consultation.

Consultation

You will chat with a therapist for about 15 minutes; you will be asked questions about what you hope to get from therapy. You may share as much as you feel comfortable to help decide if you and your therapist are a good match for each other. This is a great time to ask any questions you might have.

Paperwork

If you and your therapist decide to work together, you will schedule a date and receive intake paperwork. This needs to be completed before your first session.

Initial Session

During the first session, you and your therapist will spend some time reviewing paperwork and getting to know each other.

Orientation

During the orientation phase, you and your therapist will be building rapport, safety, and trust. It is entirely normal not to feel comfortable with your therapist in the beginning stages of your relationship with your therapist. You might be holding back a bit to get a sense of your therapist. You and your therapist will work together to create a treatment plan.

Exploration

This is where you dive into the issues and work on yourself. You take more risks and practice bravery and vulnerability. It is the hardest part of therapy. During this phase, you might temporarily feel worse than you did before. There is no rush to phase. Remember, this is collaborative work between you and your therapist.

Resolution/ Saying Goodbye

Once you feel like you have accomplished everything you can with your therapist, it’s might be time to consider leaving. This may happen within three months for some individuals; for others, it might take longer. The length of time in therapy varies depending on each individual. Sometimes people need to switch therapists if they feel like they have reached a limit with their current one. Some individuals also switch therapists because their current therapeutic relationship is not working, and that is fine. Some people use therapy as a preventative and maintenance practice to stay in therapy for life, which is okay. We will do our best to support you in whatever your reasons for leaving are.
